To be as productive and as successful as you can be, you have to work smarter, not harder. Hard work will certainly give you a better chance of getting ahead in life – but at times – despite your best efforts, your hard work can amount to nothing. Understandably, it can be very frustrating when this happens.
It is entirely possible to achieve better results with less work. You just need to know how to work smarter, not harder.
How Successful People Work Smarter, Not Harder
The old adage is true – if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Writing down a plan and sticking to it is a vital step in working smart, not hard. Remember to write the plan in order of priority.
There are a few rare stories of individuals achieving success without the help of others, but there are plenty more of people achieving success with help. Two hands is always better than one. You can work on what you know you can do best and outsource the other tasks.
3. Take Breaks
You can’t work at your maximum potential if you are feeling burnt out. This doesn’t just mean ensuring you get a good night’s sleep, but also taking a break from work every so often. Whether it be taking a whole day off work so you can start the next day afresh or taking a 5 minute break every hour, it is vital to take a break. Find out what works best for you.
4. Focus on 1 thing
Multitasking is a myth. You often get less done because your brain has trouble switching back and forth between tasks. Focus on only 1 task at a time, and notice how the quality of your work and your productivity skyrockets.
5. Eliminate perfectionism
Perfectionism can be both good and bad; it is great that someone wants to produce work that is of the highest quality, but then again the trade off is that much less work gets done.
People who work smart, not hard, finish a task that needs doing as quickly as possible and then come back to it when everything else is done. By doing this, deadlines are met.
6. Be flexible
Despite your best efforts, things tend not to go completely to plan. Therefore, you must be flexible. Just because you see the clock strike 5pm, it does not mean that you should stop working. Continue working until the task that needs finishing is done. You will be more productive than 95% of people out there if you are flexible.
7. Look to improve
Just because you have gotten into the habit of doing something a certain way, it does not mean that there is not a better way of doing it.
Study others who seem to get more done in less time and learn from them. Never be afraid to try a new way of doing something etc. Remember that you can always go back to the old way if the new way isn’t working for you. Successful People Work Smarter, Not Harder, – constantly looking to improve the way they do thing is one of the primary reasons for their success.
